Understanding Sports Injuries

Understanding Sports Injuries and How Physiotherapy Can Help.

Sports are a common staple in everyday Malaysian Life, be it a casual match of badminton, a competitive game of football or even a nice Sunday evening jog at the park. These sports are what keep us active, but what often happens is people get injured while doing these activities, be it a sprained ankle or something far worse like a ligament tear, these injuries may not seem serious at first but can have consequences if not addressed immediately, Let’s break it down.

What are some common sports related injuries?:

  • Bone fractures: Sudden force applied to a bone from things like falling the wrong way or slipping while trying to get the ball in the net can crack or break it, this causes stress fractures in bones and if not treated properly may impede your ability to move.
  • Bursitis: Bursitis is a type of repetitive strain injury that affects your bursae; which are soft tissues that provide padding and shock absorption between your bones and other tissues.
  • Contusions: Contusions are bruises. They come from bleeding under your skin. While ordinary bruises are superficial and often only require a short period of rest, serious contusions such as muscle contusions or bone contusions may lead to chronic pain and diminish your ability to play sports.
  • Tendinitis: Tendinitis is also a type or repetitive strain injury that affects your tendons; which are connective tissues that connect muscles to bones. Which may lead to stiffness, chronic pains and overall a worse range of motion in affected areas.

Which body parts get injured the most in sports?:

  • Achilles tendon: Located above your heel, the Achilles tendon is a thick cord that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. Strain on this tendon can cause tendinitis or even a rupture, you’ll see this injury most commonly in sports that require intense movements of the feet.
  • Knee Joint: Your knee joint includes several ligaments that you can sprain or tear easily from common factors such as exercising without the proper shoes, or performing heavy lifting without proper form.
  • Shoulder Joint: Injuries to your shoulder’s rotator cuff, including tears and tendinitis, and can often be injured in sports that repetitively use shoulder movements like badminton or golf.

Common Symptoms of Sports Injuries:

  • Muscle or bone pain (musculoskeletal pain)
  • Bruises, color changes or swelling that you can see
  • A bone or joint looking out of place
  • A hard time moving or putting weight on the affected body part.
